Women’s Reservation Bill
The Women’s Reservation Bill was passed by Rajya Sabha on Thursday, September 21, a day after it was approved by Lok Sabha by an overwhelming majority. The Bill’s motion, which calls for 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lower House and state legislatures, was approved by the Upper House with 215 votes in favour and none opposed. The Bill, which is currently on its way to the President of India – Droupadi Murmu, will become an Act after she has ratified it and will be put into the Constitution as a new article – 334A.
Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Sanatan Dharma Remark
On Friday, September 22, the Supreme Court consented to hear a petition seeking the filing of an FIR against Tamil Nadu minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and others in connection with his “eradicate Sanatan Dharma” remark, which the petitioner compared to hate speech. A bench of Justices Aniruddha Bose and Bela M Trivedi released notices on the plea filed by Chennai-based lawyer B Jagannath, who stated that the Supreme Court has issued various orders in similar circumstances, including the registration of a FIR.
Nipah Virus In Kerala
After no new Nipah cases were recorded in the state since September 16, district authorities in Kerala’s Kozhikode withdrew containment zone limits from all nine panchayats in Vadakara Taluk on Friday and reduced other curbs in the remaining zones. Kerala Health Minister Veena George stated on September 22 that no new positive cases had been recorded. According to George, up to 66 people who completed seclusion were removed from the contact list. She also specified in a statement following an evaluation meeting that there were already 915 people on the contact list and that 365 samples had been sent for examination thus far.
Scientific Survey of Krishna Janmabhoomi
The Supreme Court denied a petition for a scientific survey of the Krishna Janmabhoomi site’s Shahi Idgah mosque in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. A bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Sanjay Kishan Kaul noted that the Allahabad High Court’s judgement on the plea under Order 26 Rule 11 of the Civil Procedure Code — in regard to the appointment of commissioners — has yet to be made. According to a Jagran article, the apex court stated during the hearing that it could not be claimed that the trial court had jurisdiction to issue the order. The Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Mukti Nirman Trust filed the petition, which requested a scientific survey of the disputed Shah Idgah mosque within the Krishna Janmabhoomi complex.
India Stops Visa Services in Canada
In response to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegation that Government of India operatives were involved in the execution of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, India has halted visa processing at its high commission and consulates in Canada. While speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, September 21, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Arindam Bagchi stated that the Indian high commission and consulates in Canada are not functioning properly due to threats. The MEA stated that all visa categories are suspended, but underlined that people with valid visas and OCI cards can travel freely.
