Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday reiterated his “wealth redistribution” claim saying Congress will “take control of people’s wealth and distribute it”. “Prince of Congress (Rahul Gandhi) says when their government comes to power, how much property you have, how many houses you have, it will be enquired into. If you have an ancestral home if you have a flat in the City Congress may even take one out of these two. This is Maoist, communist thinking. That is what they want to implement in India,” the prime minister said while addressing a public rally in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh.

PM Modi was referring to former Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s statement from earlier this month, where he said that if voted into office in the Lok Sabha elections, Congress would conduct a financial and institutional survey to ascertain who owns the wealth of the country, and would then undertake an exercise to redistribute the same.

“I want to warn the countrymen. Congress and the INDI alliance have their eyes on your earnings and your property. The ‘Shehzada’ of Congress says that if their government comes to power, they will investigate who earns how much, who has how many properties…Our mothers and sisters have gold. It is ‘stree dhan’, it is considered sacred, the law also protects it. Now these people’s eyes are on the ‘Mangalsutra’ of women. Their intention is to steal the gold of mothers and sisters,” the prime minister said.

“These dynastic people, by looting the people of the country have made their Empire. They have not given anything to people from their property… to loot the people of the country is their birthright is what they think,” the prime minister added.

PM Modi’s remarks come a day after a controversy erupted when he made the same comments during a Lok Sabha poll rally in Rajastha’s Banswara on Sunday.

Citing former PM Manmohan Singh’s remark about minorities having the first claim on the country’s resources, the prime minister had said the Congress will even snatch ‘mangalsutras‘ from women and give them to ‘infiltrators’.

“They have said that if the Congress government comes into power, it will survey everyone’s property. They will investigate how much gold our sisters have… Our Adivasi families own silver. How much silver they have will be recorded. They will check how much property and money the government employees own. This is not it, they also said that the gold owned by our sisters and their other properties will be equally redistributed,” he added.
