Taiwan could hire over 100,000 Indians as it faces an ageing workforce and a rapidly ageing population.
Taiwan may hire as many as 100,000 Indians to work at factories, farms and hospitals and these workers could be headed to the island as early as next month, people familiar with the developments told news agency Bloomberg.
The people familiar with the developments said that both nations are expected to sign an employment mobility agreement as early as December.
Taiwan and India have an investment promotion pact signed in 2018.
How Taiwanese officials will certify the health of Indian workers willing to move to Taiwan remains unclear but steps are being taken. The Bloomberg report said that Taiwan is offering Indian workers pay parity with locals and insurance policies.
Taiwan has an ageing population which means it needs more workers and India could provide the east Asian nation with the workforce it requires. Taiwan is expected to become a “super aged” society by 2025 and elderly people are expected to make up for more than one-fifth of the population.
China could likely be enraged with these steps as it opposes official exchanges with Taiwan. China has vowed to ‘reunite’ the self-ruled island with the ‘motherland’ and claims that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. China is separated from Taiwan by a narrow body of water known as the Taiwan Strait.
India has an active unofficial relationship with Taiwan and has not discarded the “One China Policy” under which the island is recognised as being part of China. On Thursday, the Union ministry of external affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that the India-Taiwan jobs pact is now in the final stages of negotiation.
The Taiwanese ministry of labour said it welcomes cooperation with countries that can provide Taiwan with workers.
India-China relations are going through a tough phase ever since China attempted to encroach territories near Galwan Valley and Pangong Tso lake and eastern Ladakh. China further deteriorated relations by releasing a map in August by claiming more Indian territories as its own.
Earlier this year, three former Indian military chiefs visited Taiwan for a security conference, angering Beijing.
Unemployment levels in Taiwan have dropped to its lowest level since 2000 and the nation needs workers to keep the $790 billion economy going.
India which has surpassed China in terms of population has signed agreements with 13 countries, including Japan, France and the UK and is discussing similar arrangements with Netherlands, Greece, Denmark and Switzerland where it will send workers to these countries as they face ageing workforces.
