Pakistan Terrorist Attack: This is the second time in 2023 the Tehreek-e-Jihad Pakistan terrorists have attacked a security establishment. They attacked a Pakistan air force base in November.

Terrorists affiliated to Tehreek-e-Jihad Pakistan (TJP) stormed a security compound in the Draban area of Dera Ismail Khan district and caused “multiple casualties” on Tuesday as they attacked security forces and a police station adjacent to the compound.

A separate report by news agency AFP said that 23 people were killed and said the attack was carried out by terrorists affiliated with the Pakistani Taliban.

They also said that all the attackers were killed and a search-and-combing operation is underway. A vehicle full of explosives caused the initial explosion during the wee hours of Tuesday morning.

The TJP claimed the attack and its spokesman Mullah Qasim said it was a suicide mission led by Mawlawi Hassan Gandapur, Pakistan-based news media outlets reported.

This is the second time in two months that the TJP has attacked security forces. They attacked a Pakistan Air Force Base in Mianwali in Punjab in November and damaged several fighter planes in the attack.

The Pakistan army personnel present at the air base killed nine terrorists and prevented further damage to the airbase during the November attack.

Pakistan has been suffering from a wave of terrorism along with the political and economic crisis it has been facing. The situation has been exacerbated due to the rise of the Taliban in Afghanistan who have not shown any interest in reigning in its Pakistani counterpart, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), who broke the ceasefire deal with the Pakistan government in 2022.

The Islamabad-based think tank Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) in a study said Pakistan suffered 599 militant attacks, resulting in 897 fatalities and 1,241 injuries in the first 11 months of 2023. “This signifies an 81% escalation in militant attacks, an 86% surge in resultant deaths, and a 64% rise in the number of injured compared to the corresponding period in 2022,” the report said.

“Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) emerged as the most affected province, with 51 attacks, causing 54 fatalities and 81 injuries,” the report further added.

Tuesday’s attack also occurred in the southern part of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
