British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wished “Shubh Diwali” to people in the UK and around the world on Wednesday, as he welcomed guests from the Hindu community to Downing Street ahead of the festival of lights.

“Tonight Prime Minister Rishi Sunak welcomed guests from the Hindu community to Downing Street ahead of Diwali – a celebration of the triumph of light over darkness. Shubh Diwali to everyone across the UK and around the world celebrating this weekend,” Sunak tweeted.

Sunak, the first British Asian prime minister, was accompanied by his wife Akshata Murty during the celebration. The 43-year-old British-Indian PM is a devout Hindu who is publicly seen partaking in many religious processions.

During Sunak’s recent India visit to G20, the first couple of UK visited Delhi’s Akshardham temple and performed abhishek (ritual pouring of water) on the murti of Nilkanth Varni Maharaj, and offered prayers for world peace, progress, and harmony.

“I am a proud Hindu. That’s how I was raised, that’s how I am. Hopefully, I can visit the Mandir while I am here for the next couple of days. We just had Rakshabandhan, so from my sister and my cousin, I have all my Rakhis,” the British PM told ANI during his visit to New Delhi.
