The shooting events at the 19th Asian Games are set to begin in Hangzhou on September 24. A total of 33 gold medals will be on offer in different disciplines across rifle, pistol and shotgun categories. The shooting events of this year’s Asiad will be hosted at the Fuyang Yinhu Sports Centre till October 1. India has sent a strong 33-member shooting contingent to Hangzhou. The Indian shooters will compete in 27 events across men’s, women’s and mixed categories. Eyes will be on youth Olympic Games gold medallist Manu Bhaker and former world champion Rudrankksh Patil, who are expected to wave the tricolour high at the Hangzhou Games.

India have enjoyed tremendous success in shooting events at the Asian Games over the years. Raja Randhir Singh was the first Indian shooter to taste success at the Asiad, securing a silver in the Men’s Trap at the 1974 Tehran Games. Since then, India have so far claimed a total of 58 Asian Games medals in shooting which include nine gold medals.

At the previous Jakarta Games in 2018, India finished third in the shooting medal tally with nine medals. The Indian contingent was only behind China and South Korea in the final standings. Rani Sarnobat scripted history by becoming the first female shooter from India to bag an Asian Games gold. She triumphed in the Women’s 25m Pistol event. The other gold medal was claimed by Saurabh Chaudhary, who prevailed in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol.
