Malik, alongside fellow wrestlers and Olympic and Commonwealth medallists Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat spearheaded the fight against harassment of women at the nation’s wrestling federation.

Olympic medallist Sakshi Malik was named in the Icons section of the TIME 100 most influential people in the world for the year 2024 as the wrestler spearheaded the protest against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who was accused of sexual harassment of female wrestlers.

Some of the nation’s best wrestlers voiced their protest against the toxic culture that was prevalent in the federation as Malik, alongside fellow wrestlers and Olympic and Commonwealth medallists Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat took the fight against harassment of women by the former WFI president.

The movement which started out as a hartal at the famous Jantar Mantar soon picked up pace and garnered support from all sides as the wrestlers sought to do away with the culprits supposedly responsible for the plight of the wrestlers.

The drawn-out saga features multiple twists and turns and culminated with Malik hanging up her boots and tendering her retirement in a sensational presser after Sanjay Singh, a close aide of Brij Bhushan, was elected as the new president of the federation.

The protest brought to light the alleged harassment that female wrestlers had to suffer through at the federation and nearly brought the wrestling fraternity to a standstill.

The list also featured Spanish football star Jenni Hermoso, who was kissed on the lips by then RFEF president Luis Rubiales after the Spanish women’s team had won their maiden FIFA Women’s World Cup crown in Australia.

The incident shook the federation to its foundation bringing about a plethora of changes including the removal of Rubiales from the helm of the federation.

The List also featured three-time F1 champion and Red Bull Racing poster boy Max Verstappen in the Titans category, which also included WNBA star A’ja Wilson.

Alia Bhatt, Satya Nadella, Dev Patel and Ajay Banga were the other Indians who featured in various other categories, such as artists and leaders, on the list.
