Nvidia is riding the AI wave as the company recently overtook Amazon and Google-parent Alphabet as the US third most valuable company. While it is assumed that Nvidia’s top competitor is AMD, the former has identified a Chinese company, which is primarily known for making smartphones, as its top competitor.
Nvidia’s filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission listed Huawei as a top competitor in multiple areas, including artificial intelligence (AI) chips. This is the first time the company has identified Huawei in this way.
The Santa Clara, California-based company said Huawei competes in supplying chips for AI, including graphics processing units (GPUs), central processing units (CPUs), and networking chips. Nvidia also identified Huawei as a cloud service provider developing its own hardware and software to improve AI computing.
Nvidia’s A100 chip vs Huawei 910B chip
Huawei’s Ascend series chips are rivals to Nvidia’s AI chip line. The Chinese company’s main product, the 910B chip, competes with Nvidia’s A100 chip, launched three years ago, as per a report by news agency Reuters.
Reports have suggested that apart from Nvidia, other players are also working on their own AI chips to compete with Nvidia that had to rework their powerful chips for the Chinese market. Search giant Baidu reportedly placed a chip order with Huawei before the US government imposed restrictions on advanced AI chip exports to China.
Nvidia also identified Intel, Advanced Micro Devices, Broadcom, and Qualcomm as competitors. The company additionally listed major cloud computing companies like Amazon.com and Microsoft.
Nvidia hits $2 trillion valuation
Nvidia hit $2 trillion in market value on Friday (February 23) as demand for its chips boomed in recent times. This milestone followed another bumper revenue forecast from the chip designer that drove up its market value by $277 billion this week – Wall Street’s largest one-day gain on record.
Nvidia’s chips are used by almost all generative AI players, including ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, Microsoft and Google. This has helped the company leapfrog from $1 trillion to $2 trillion market value in about nine months – the fastest among US companies. Reportedly, Nvidia achieved this in less than half the time it took tech giants Apple and Microsoft to reach $2 trillion valuation.
