The now-taken down derogatory post on Instagram, which was made a day after the BJP fielded Kangana Ranaut from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi, showed a photo of scantily-clad Kangana Ranaut, with a derogatory caption

Hours after a row erupted when an objectionable post on Kangana Ranaut was shared on the Instagram account of Congress leader Supriya Shrinate, former President Pranab Mukherjee’s daughter, Sharmistha Mukherjee, said nothing was left of Congress ideology with the Rahul-Congress gang.

On Shrinate’s claim that several people had access to her social media account and someone had shared the objectionable post on her account, Sharmistha Mukherjee said one allowed his or her social media access to people whom they could trust.

“She’s saying ‘access’, not hacked! One gives access to SM accounts only to known & trusted people. Nothing left of Congress ideology with the Rahul-Congress gang. ‘Nari Nyay’ is nothing but an empty slogan by a bunch of hypocrites!” Sharmistha Mukherjee wrote on microblogging site X (formerly Twitter).

The now-taken down derogatory post on Instagram, which was made a day after the BJP fielded Kangana Ranaut from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi, showed a photo of scantily-clad Kangana Ranaut, with a derogatory caption.

However, Supriya Shrinate later claimed that the social media post was made by someone who had access to her Facebook and Instagram accounts. She also blamed a parody account that was misusing her name on X.

“Many people have access to my Facebook and Instagram accounts. One of these people had posted a very disgusting and objectionable post today. As soon as I came to know about this, I removed that post. Anyone who knows me knows very well that I don’t make personal remarks about any woman,” she wrote on X and shared a video message.

“It has come to my knowledge that this post was earlier running on a parody account (@Supriyaparody). Someone picked up this post from here and posted it on my account. I am trying to identify the person who did this. Also, the parody account created by misusing my name has also been reported in X,” she added.

Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut had responded to the derogatory post on social media, saying “every woman deserves her dignity”.

Shrinate’s clarification post draws BJP’s ire

BJP leader Shazia Ilmi also reacted to Srinate’s clarification post and said, “Even though Supriya Shrinate is denying the allegations saying her account had been hacked, if we look at the social media handles of Congress, they make all sorts of derogatory remarks, post deepfake videos and share objectionable posts.”

“Why are Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi quiet about it? Why have they not suspended Supriya Shrinate from the party?… No leader raised their voice against this. Even Jaya Bachchan did not say anything about this…” she added.

BJP leader Amit Malviya also hit out at the Congress leader. He took to X saying, “If your account is posting what a parody account posts, then it simply means that admins of both accounts are same. One has to be self conceited, to the point of being deranged, to do so. Also the admins must have very low opinion of you to post such offensive stuff and get away.”

NCW takes action

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW), through a letter to the Election Commission of India (ECI), has sought ‘strict action’ against Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate and party leader HS Ahir for their ‘lewd and derogatory’ social media posts against actor Kangana Ranaut.

“NCW is appalled by the disgraceful conduct of Ms. Supriya Shrinate and Mr HS Ahir. Such behaviour is intolerable and goes against the dignity of women. (NCW chief) Rekha Sharma has sent a letter to ECI demanding immediate and strict against them. Let’s uphold respect and dignity for all women,” NCW posted on X.
