In 2022-23, the average salary decreased to Rs 21.9 lakh.

Of the 1,513 students enrolled with IIT Delhi’s career services in 2022-23, only 1,270 were successfully placed.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi in response to Right to Information Act queries, has shared disturbing data on job placements for its students during 2019-2023. The institution said that about 22 per cent of students who sought placements during these five years were unable to get jobs. This disclosure has sparked a discussion on the employment prospects for graduates of this prestigious institution.

The institution said that job placements for this year are ongoing but declined to provide exact details on recruitment. However, experts predict an employment rate of about 40 per cent for 2024, which while representing progress over previous years, also shows that a significant number of students still struggle to find jobs.

The information from the RTI Act shows that the average and median salaries at IIT Delhi have remained the same for the last four years. In the year 2021-22, the average cost to the company (CTC) was Rs 23.8 lakh and the gross salary was Rs 19.9 lakh. In the year 2022-23, the average salary decreased to Rs 21.9 lakh (CTC) and Rs 18.6 lakh (gross), with a median salary of Rs 19.5 lakh (CTC) and Rs 17.4 lakh (gross).

The placement figures for the respective years give an insight into the unemployment situation. In the year 2021-22, all 1,105 students registered with IIT Delhi’s career services were successfully placed. Of the 1,513 students enrolled in 2022-23, the number increased slightly to 1,270. However, there were still 366 unfilled seats in 2021-22 and 243 in 2022-23.

Dheeraj Singh, a former student of IIT Kanpur and founder of Global IIT Alumni Support Group, expressed concern over the high number of unplaced students at IIT Delhi in the last five years. Singh, who has filed the RTI application, expressed shock at the doubling of unplaced students to 40 per cent in the current year and pointed out this critical situation. He stressed that IIT Delhi officials and the education ministry should resolve the matter and get a handle on the job crisis.

Singh pointed out the situation of the unplaced students and how unemployment affects their emotional health and causes high levels of stress, anxiety and hopelessness. He urged IIT Delhi to support these students and give them a second chance to take up placements outside the regular season.
