Inert grenade found in Uber prompts NYPD bomb squad response amid anti-Israel protests in Times Square, leading to arrests

A grenade was found in the back seat of an Uber in Times Square on Saturday, with the New York Police Department (NYPD) bomb squad facing difficulties reaching the scene due to anti-Israel protesters obstructing traffic.

Several protesters participating in the pro-Palestine demonstration were apprehended for impeding the path of the police vehicle responding to the incident, the New York Post reported, citing law enforcement officials.

‘This is dangerous’

NYPD released footage showing demonstrators surrounding a police vehicle at Times Square before officers intervened to disperse them. In a social media post, NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry condemned the obstruction of an NYPD vehicle on its way to a bomb threat call.

New York police officials were furious over protesters’ bid to stop first responders. “This is dangerous! One day when the “call” is real and people get hurt, then what? I will tell you what…..silence and cowardice from all the people who advocate for protesters to be allowed to disrupt the streets. Then the first responders will arrive to do the best they can!” Chief John Chell, NYPD Chief of Patrol said in a post on X.

After the reports emerged about the discovery of the grenade, the police managed to establish a security perimeter around the vehicle and closed off traffic on 42nd Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues.
