Edge already shows quite a few ads, banners, and pop-ups to encourage you to keep it as your default browser. But, what if the user still does not want to stick around, then they might have to answer a poll, letting Microsoft know why you want to switch to another browser.
While attempting to download Chrome through Microsoft Edge, NeoWin discovered that Microsoft was presenting users with a poll.The poll appeared in a sidebar after the users opened and waited for the Chrome download to begin. The poll asked users why they thought they needed another browser. The questionnaire includes the following options:
Can you please take a minute to tell us why you are trying another browser?
- I can’t search Google easily
- I can’t access my Google documents
- I don’t have my favourites or passwords here
- Too many ads and pop-ups
- I don’t like the news feed
- It’s too slow
- My websites don’t work on Microsoft Edge
- My reason is not listed
That’s not it. Earlier this year, Microsoft started showing ads to those trying to download Chrome or any other browser. If a user tries to download Chrome using Edge Canary, you will see two ads, and Microsoft uses manipulative language to criticise Chrome. Edge connects to ad providers when you turn on your computer, enforces Bing, and cannot be removed.
Microsoft has been showing a banner at the top of Bing search results for Chrome to users, reading “Microsoft Edge is powered by the same open-source technology as Google Chrome.”
Aside from trying to steer people away from Chrome, Microsoft has also tried to dissuade people from trying Google’s AI chatbot, Bard. A developer version of Edge shows an advertisement for Bing next to the Google Bar URL in the search bar.
