The Euro 2024 will reportedly use a microchip in their match balls to detect handballs and offsides more accurately.
The Times recently came out with a report that reads, “A microchip inside the ball that helps to determine whether there has been a handball in the lead-up to a goal and also aids offside decisions will be used at Euro 2024.”
The main motive for the implementation of this technology is to improve the refereeing accuracy in the game helping in more fair results. In the last century, football witnessed major changes over the years. Hence, this new technological implementation might not come as a surprise to many fans.
According to The Times, the said microchip will ‘work in tandem’ with a limb-tracking technology. It will help create a real-time 3D visual representation of the player skeleton. These chips will enable the video assistant referee or VARs to generate computerised images that have the potential to display the exact area of impact when a ball touches a human body.
The official Adidas match ball will also have the technology to determine the exact time when the ball was kicked. This along with the limb-tracking camera will provide ‘ultra-accurate’ offside decisions. However, this system will still be termed semi-automated as VAR and the referees will still be making the final decision of the play. It was also reported that the officials who witnessed the new technology in action were greatly impressed by its accuracy.
FIFA was the first football governing body to use this technology. They used the chip in the ball for offsides in the 2022 Men’s World Cup in Qatar. UEFA will now be the next major body to follow suit with the 2024 Euros in Germany. It is still not sure if this technology will also make its way to the Champions League next season due to the cost implications. The microchip ball is considerably more expensive than the typical offside system used in football.
Last week, FIFA’s referee committee chairman Pierluigi Collina confirmed that the upcoming Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia will also be using a similar technology for offside decisions. UEFA have also used a semi-automatic system to determine offside decisions in UEFA competitions so far. Chief refereeing officer Roberto Rosetti claimed that the system has reduced the time to half of what it used to take to review offside decisions.
Speaking of the Euros, the premier competition will take place across different cities in Germany from June 14 to July 14. The final of the tournament will be hosted in Berlin.
