Meet Gujarat’s Ganesh Baraiya, 23-year-old MBBS Who Was Rejected Due To His Height – News18

Ganesh Baraiya, a 23-year-old from Gujarat, recently completed his MBBS degree. He is just 3 feet tall and may potentially be the world’s shortest doctor. However, his journey to attain a medical degree was not without challenges. He faced rejection from the Medical Council of India (MCI) committee, which cited concerns about his ability to handle emergency cases due to his height.

Undeterred, Ganesh sought guidance from the principals of Nilkanth Vidyapeeth, Dr Dalpath Bhai Katariya and Revasish Servaiya. Together, they decided to pursue the matter in the High Court of Gujarat.

After a prolonged legal battle, Ganesh Baraiya emerged victorious with the Supreme Court ruling in his favour. “A judgment from the Supreme Court of India in 2018 granted me admission to MBBS, and no one can prevent me from pursuing it,” he explained. However, by the time the ruling was made, the MBBS admission process for that year had already concluded.

As a result, Ganesh secured admission to MBBS in 2019. On August 1, 2019, he enrolled at Government Medical College, Bhavnagar, marking the beginning of his MBBS journey. Recently, he completed his MBBS and obtained his degree. Currently, he is serving as an intern at Sir-T Hospital in Bhavnagar.

Dr Baraiya, the son of a farmer, is currently serving as an intern doctor at a hospital in Bhavnagar. “Today, as he embarks on his internship after completing four and a half years of MBBS education, it brings us immense joy. He has always been resourceful in navigating through challenges. Whenever we asked about his difficulties, he would share them with us, and we made every effort to address them. His friends, classmates, and batch-mates have been his strongest support system, accompanying him every step of the way. Additionally, the teachers provided him with the necessary attention, recognising his unique needs within the class,” stated Dr Hemant Mehta, Dean of the Medical College, to APP PTI.
