Every year, there are typically four eclipses, consisting of two lunar and two solar. The first eclipse of 2024 is scheduled for March 25, marking the initial lunar eclipse. Before eclipses, certain practices are observed to mitigate any inauspicious effects they may bring. One such practice involves adding basil (Tulsi) to food items to safeguard against these effects. However, there’s another leaf that can be used for this purpose, as shared by Bhopal-based astrologer and Vastu consultant Pandit Hitendra Kumar Sharma.

Durva, a type of grass, holds significant importance in Hindu religious practices and auspicious ceremonies. Known for its auspicious properties, Durva is particularly cherished by Lord Ganesha, the deity associated with wisdom and prosperity. In Hindu worship, various materials are employed, each carrying its symbolic significance. Among these materials, Durva holds a special place, as no auspicious ritual is considered complete without its inclusion.

Durva grass is not only used in the worship of Lord Ganesha but also the worship of various other deities such as Lord Shiva, Goddess Durga, Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Lakshmi, among others. Offering 21 Durvas while worshipping Lord Ganesha is believed to attract immense blessings from him.

The use of Durva during an eclipse is also considered highly auspicious as it is believed to ward off inauspicious and negative effects associated with the event. Before the eclipse, various food items such as water, food, milk, and the idol kept in the temple were often stored for safekeeping.

After an eclipse, any food that hasn’t been protected with Durva is thought to be contaminated and may have negative effects on health. Therefore, Durva is considered sacred and holds significant importance in mythology.

During lunar eclipses, there are several beliefs in astrology regarding precautions to be taken:

1. Consumption of food and drink is often prohibited during the eclipse.

2. The environment is believed to become negative and impure during the eclipse, especially during the Sutak period, so it is advised to avoid entering temples or religious places.

3. It’s suggested to refrain from eating during the eclipse and avoid cutting hair and nails.

4. Bathing during the eclipse is discouraged; it’s advised to take a bath before or after the eclipse.

5. Pregnant women are advised to stay indoors and avoid using sharp objects during the eclipse.
