Elon Musk has made big moves in recent years, none more than paying a $44 billion to buy Twitter and then rebrand the platform to X. But it seems Musk isn’t done with his ambitions to take on the best and for that, he plans to set up a new mailing client which is going to be called XMail.

Gmail has been facing an existential crisis this week after a strange rumour suggested that Google is shutting down the big mailing client.

News like these are undoubtedly going to scare people, while some of them were anguished with the possibility of Google shutting down Gmail. So, just like that, one of the engineers at X posted asking, “When we making Xmail,” which is nothing but a rival and alternative to Gmail. Elon Musk, as he usually does, replied to this post from one of his employees, saying, “It’s coming.”

Going by the name of the mailing client, it seems Musk is looking to expand the X universe beyond social media and payments, which is also part of his plans. Musk has already added a slew of features to the X Premium version, which includes ability to make video calls, use AI chatbot Grok and more.

Having a mailing client in his kitty will definitely appeal to more people, but running a service of that magnitude will be far more challenging than a social media app. After all, Gmail is the ubiquitous platform that billions use for sending mails and others. In fact, the Gmail ID is used to sign into other apps and more importantly, the only way to use an Android phone.

Surely Google cannot kill such a big product, and Gmail did try to quell those rumours, saying, Gmail is here to stay, which isn’t the best way to convince users about your future, but then Google is never worth trusting in those matters, as history has shown us. As for Musk, we’ll take his word with a pinch of salt for now, and wait till the product actually goes live to the public.
