Israel-Hamas war: Rose Elisheva Lubin’s death brings the toll of police officers killed since October 7 to 59

An Israeli-US border police officer who was critically wounded in a stabbing attack near Jerusalem’s Old City has died. Sgt. Rose Elisheva Lubin’s death on Monday morning brings the toll of police officers killed since October 7 to 59, according to The Time of Israel.

20-year-old Lubin from Kibbutz Sa’ad in southern Israel had moved from the United States in August 2021 and was drafted into the police force as a so-called “lone soldier” in March 2022. Her burial will held on Thursday.

This incident marks the latest violence to flare up in the area as Israel deepens its military offensive in Gaza. On October 30, a Palestinian stabbed and seriously wounded an Israeli police officer before being shot dead in east Jerusalem, the police said.

In a statement, police said that “a terrorist armed with a knife stabbed border police officers at the Shalem police station” and that police “neutralised the terrorist”. Police said another soldier, also 20, suffered light injuries. The assailant was identified by police as a 16-year-old Palestinian from the east Jerusalem neighbourhood of Issawiya. The force added that “another suspect” had been arrested near the scene of the attack.

Israeli forces have stepped up their ground offensive in Gaza as part of the military response to the October 7 Hamas attacks that officials say killed 1,400 people, mostly civilians, with more than 240 people taken hostage. Israel has bombed the Gaza Strip and sent in ground troops, with the health ministry in the Hamas-run Palestinian territory saying over 10,000 people have been killed.
