The trend of certain “big families” having weddings overseas worries the PM.

The trend of destination weddings in foreign locations have gained traction in the last decade and a half. While it may be a grand joyous celebration, the trend has found a sharp critique in Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The trend of certain “big families” having weddings overseas worries the PM, who on Sunday, urged people to have these events in India to prevent money from leaving the nation. In his Mann Ki Baat radio address, PM Modi stated that individuals should prioritise purchasing wedding-related items manufactured in India alone. “Wedding season has also started at this point. According to some trade associations, this wedding season may bring in almost Rs 5 lakh crore in revenue. All of you should prioritise buying wedding-related items manufactured in India alone,” he advised.

He added that if Indians celebrate marriage among themselves on Indian land, the nation’s wealth will stay in India. According to him, this will be a significant step towards the government’s “Vocal for Local” goal. He also said that people of the nation will get to serve in one way or the other in big marriages held on Indian soil, thus providing some employment and source of income to people of the country. “Just ponder… these days, a new milieu is being created by some families to go abroad and conduct weddings. Is this at all necessary? Can you extrapolate on this mission of ‘Vocal for Local’? Why don’t we hold such wedding ceremonies in our own country?” the PM said.

“Systems may not exist today in the exact form you desire, but if we continue to host these kinds of events, they will eventually evolve. This is a subject pertaining to large families. I really hope that those large families will hear about my concern,” he continued.

Many people plan their weddings outside of India in the hopes of experiencing an unprecedented level of celebration. It will be interesting to observe if PM Modi’s appeal causes them to reconsider.

A caution was previously issued by Delhi Police on November 23 due to increased traffic amid the ongoing wedding season. There are reports that almost 4 lakh weddings will be held in Delhi this season, which could result in traffic bottlenecks, prompting the issuance of this warning.
