Apple has released the release candidate for iOS 17.2 update to testers, which includes the support for the Qi2 wireless charging standard for older iPhone models – iPhone 13 and 14 series.
The iPhone 15 series, including iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models, already have the support for Qi2 charging standard, and now the upcoming update will enable Qi2 support on the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 14, and iPhone 14 Pro models.
The update will enable 15W wireless fast charging on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 models, even if you are using a non-MagSafe charger, though the wireless charger needs to be Qi2-certified.
What is Qi2
Qi2, the successor to the Qi wireless charging standard, is based on Apple’s “Magnetic Power Profile,” incorporating a ring of magnets similar to MagSafe. The consortium says that this standard is safe, efficient, and interoperable with other brands. Qi2 and MagSafe will be interoperable in the future, says the consortium.
For iPhone users, Qi2 provides 15W charging speed, equivalent to that of MagSafe without the need to pay for a MagSafe charger, which would be extra since Apple adds its MFi fees. Currently, if you charge an iPhone on a magnetic wireless charger that is not MagSafe-certified, the charging speeds are limited to 7.5W.
As for Android phones, the users will be able to use the vast ecosystem of magnetic wireless chargers that have been developed to support MagSafe iPhones.
Even though iPhone 12 models are MagSafe compatible, they seem to be incompatible with the Qi2, so the users will have to make do with a MagSafe charger if they want fast charging at 15W.
The iOS 17.2 update is expected to be released in the next few days. The update includes several new features such as the Journal app, the ability for iPhone 15 Pro to capture spatial video, a translation option for Action Button on iPhone 15 Pro models, and more.
