Lemon is used in every household. It is sour and is used in lemon sherbet, lemonade, salad, and shikanji, among other drinks and food items. Lemons are rich in vitamin C and great demand in the market during the summer months. During this time, it is no longer available at a cheap price. So many people plant lemon trees in their houses so that they don’t have to go out to buy expensive lemons; instead, they can just pluck them from their garden.

Planting lemon trees is very easy. One can grow a lemon tree from its seeds in a pot in their house or their garden by following some basic guidelines. So today, let’s take a look at some simple tips to grow a lemon plant at home.

1. Buy a good-quality pot to grow lemons. The pot should not be too small. There must be a small hole in its bottom so that excess water can drain out.

2. You should take good-quality soil. First, put some soil in the pot. Moisten it by adding water. Don’t make it too wet or muddy. Mix the soil well. If seeds are planted in too-wet soil, they may rot. If you use pasteurised soil, then bacteria will not grow in the seeds. Also, if organic fertiliser is mixed, the seeds will get full nutrition.

3. Now put the soil in the pot. Leave one or two inches empty from the top. Make a one-inch hole in the middle of the soil with the help of a wooden stick so that the lemon seeds can be inserted.

4. Take large-sized lemons of good quality, as they contain more seeds. It would be better if you put 6-7 seeds at once. This is because sometimes some seeds get spoiled and cannot germinate. So, the remaining seeds can grow.

5. Before putting them in the soil, wash the seeds with water to remove the stickiness. This will not spoil the seeds. Now place the pointed part downwards in the soil and the round part upwards.

6. Now cover the pot with plastic and make some small holes in it so that the warmth and moisture remain intact. Keep this pot in a sunny place. A plastic cover has to be installed to avoid direct sunlight.

7. If everything goes well, sprouts will start emerging from the seed in two weeks. When you feel that the soil has dried, remove the plastic cover slightly and pour water. Do not add too much water at once.

8. When the sprouts come out of the soil, remove the plastic. Keep the pot where there is sunlight. Keep watering at a gap of every two days. As the plant grows, it will require water, fertiliser and sunlight accordingly. When the lemon tree grows, depending on its size, it will have to be taken out of the pot and planted in the ground. Many times, lemons start growing even in small pots.
