Gukesh, who became the youngest player to win the prestigious FIDE Candidates Chess Tournament, is all set to challenge the world chess title.
D Gukesh became an overnight sensation after he triumphed in the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Candidates Chess Tournament on Monday, April 22, in Toronto, Canada. It was certainly a historic feat for Gukesh, who became the youngest player to win the prestigious competition. He is also the second Indian after the legendary Viswanathan Anand to emerge victorious in the competition. The win has paved the way for 17-year-old Gukesh to challenge the world chess title. Coming off the monumental success, the teenage sensation shared a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) where he extended his gratitude to his parents, family members and other important people in his life for offering him constant support.

In the world title match, D Gukesh will face off against reigning champion Ding Liren. The Chinese player got the better of Ian Nepomniachtchi in the 2023 World Chess Championship to secure the title. The previous winner Magnus Carlsen withdrew his name from the match as he did not want to defend his championship.
After D Gukesh earned qualification for the world title match, the All India Chess Federation (AICF) is reportedly exploring the possibility of hosting the highly anticipated face-off in the country. India had previously played host to several top-level chess tournaments including the World Chess Championship and the Chess Olympiad.
The famous world title match between Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen was played in Chennai. The Indian legend, however, lost that fixture on home soil. Two years back, the 44th Chess Olympiad was also held in Chennai where more than 1,700 players from 186 countries competed.
About hosting the upcoming World Chess Championship, AICF President Nitin Narang told news agency IANS, “We are assessing the situation. There will be more clarity on the subject in a couple of days. Once we understand what is needed to host the event, then we will decide.”
FIDE are yet to decide the date and venue for this year’s world title match. As per the governing body, the championship match will comprise 14 games and a player will need to score 7.5 points or more the clinch the title. A tiebreak will be contested if the score of both players is equal after all games.
