Google Maps is the latest app to get another AI-powered feature. The company is testing a new way to find places using generative AI in Maps, offering personalised recommendations based on diverse user needs.
“Simply say what you’re looking for and our large-language models (LLMs) will analyse Maps’ detailed information about more than 250 million places and trusted insights from our community of over 300 million contributors to quickly make suggestions for where to go,” Google said in a post
How this AI feature will work
For example, you are travelling to Egypt and want to find places with unique vintage vibes. You can ask Maps, like “places with a vintage vibe in Egypt.” AI models in Maps will analyse information about nearby businesses and places along with photos, ratings and reviews from the Maps community to show results.
The results are presented in an organised manner into categories with photo carousels and review summaries, helping users discover hidden gems. Users can ask follow-up questions to refine their search, like “How about lunch?” or “What about options for kids?”. This allows for dynamic exploration based on evolving needs and preferences.
Availability
This experimental feature is currently available to select Local Guides in the US. The company will collect their feedback and refine the feature before a wider rollout.
AI features in Google Maps for India

The features include eco-friendly commute using Maps, wherein people will be assisted in making more sustainable choices across two-wheelers and four-wheelers. Users will be able to access the fuel-efficient routing feature for four-wheelers as well as two-wheelers.
