Google is gearing up for a challenging 2024 not only with regards to the AI challenge but also navigating the need to lay off people.

Google has been on a layoff spree since 2023 but with AI at the top of its focus, the company has some big plans for 2024 which has been leaked via a media report earlier this week. The roadmap is clear about one thing, AI is going to be a big part of Google’s business strategy across verticals in the next 11 months or so.

Interestingly, we also notice words like efficiency and cost savings making it to the memo, which hints at more pink slips being laid out, as indicated by Sundar Pichai, CEO, Google in recent reports. The search giant actually has not one or two but seven goals as per the leaked memo quoted by The Verge. Pichai has basically laid out Google’s plans in front of its employees in the memo and clearly looks at the impetus to build on the hype and demand for AI and bring it to various products in the months to come.

7 Big Goals For Google In 2024

– The first goal talks about delivering the world’s most advanced and safe AI for everyone. This point goes along with Google’s core focus with its AI models, not rushing it to the market and putting the right disclaimers to keep the expectations in check.

– Google wants to improve knowledge, learning, creativity, and productivity which probably looks at the vocational stuff and also some upskilling for its employees.

– The company is also aware of continuing its strategy for products, devices and platforms for personal usage.

– Google wants more customers to utilise its tools and resources provided by the Cloud business.

– The company once again points out the need to offer the world’s most trusted products and platforms.

– Google wanting the company to be extraordinary for Googlers and the world.

– And finally, Google wants to improve the velocity, efficiency, and productivity, and deliver durable cost savings throughout the year.

It is interesting to see Google mentions these pointers, and the timing does feel slightly awkward as thousands of employees have been laid off in the recent weeks and they will be reading these media reports with a keen eye on what Google has to say for its decisions. Pichai did mention that some tough decisions have to be made and the business moves have to prove their worth or else the criticism will only increase among the public.
