Google, at its ‘Made by Google’ event, announced its new Pixel Watch 2 along with the several new improvements to the WearOS operating system including new features and apps that will be coming to the smartwatch platform.
Following the announcement, the company has already started rolling out new tiles for Google Keep along with the native Gmail app for all WearOS devices. However, to get them, the watch needs to run Wear OS 4.
Native Gmail app for Wear OS now listed on Play Store
Wear OS comes with a watch version of Play Store and it now has the new Gmail app for watches. Users can head to the Play Store on their watch and search for the Gmail app and download it.
The app allows users to browse all the emails in their inbox and other folders and labels. The Gmail app for smartwatch also shows the complete email body, except attachments like images and documents. Apart from these, the Gmail app also supports multiple Gmail accounts, just like the mobile app and allows users to switch between them right from the watch.
To make things more useful, Google has also made a watch face complication for the Gmail app. There’s a catch as well. The Gmail app currently only shows the unread mails that have arrived recently and not the entire list.
Meanwhile, Google is also expected to roll out the native Calendar app for the Wear OS powered devices. That hasn’t arrived yet. We expect it to begin rolling out soon.
How to download Gmail app on Wear OS watches
First ensure that the watch is running Wear OS 4 or newer
Then, look for Google Play Store app on the watch and open it
Now, tap on search button at the top and type Gmail
From the search result, tap on Gmail option and install it
Once installed, the app will configure automatically with the Google account linked with the watch.
