Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and DB Weiss recently confirmed their decision to not move forward with a well-established franchise like Star Wars.

Following the success of Game of Thrones, David Benioff and DB Weiss were hired by Lucasfilm to direct the Star Wars trilogy. Surprisingly, the duo had even pitched a concept focusing on The First Jedi, but the studio wasn’t keen on bringing that storyline to the screens yet. In 2019, Benioff and Weiss left the studio, claiming that they wouldn’t be able to do justice to Star Wars. While Lucasfilm’s President Kathleen Kennedy had hinted about their return once their schedule allowed, but the duo recently confirmed their decision to not move forward with well-established franchises like Star Wars and even James Bond. Instead, they’ve shifted their focus on making original projects, such as their recent series 3 Body Problem, which is currently streaming on Netflix.

While appearing on the Inside Total Film podcast, Benioff was asked if they would return to work on Star Wars in the future. In response, David stated, “No, I don’t think so. I think you know, when you’ve got a franchise that’s already so well established, like Star Wars or James Bond or so forth, I think there’s less independence when you come in to try to tell a story that you want to tell and so I think what Dan and I have learned is that it’s more fun for us to start something afresh.”

Further, talking about their Netflix series 3 Body Problem, Benioff added, “Obviously, we’re coming in on the shoulders of [author Liu Cixin] here, he’s the one who created these novels and everything but because we’re the ones adapting them, at least for the English language. We have a lot of flexibility in terms of the story we want to tell and that’s a lot more fun for us than the other version.”

David Benioff and DB Weiss are now fully committed to their Netflix project, 3 Body Problem. The duo is gearing up to extend the show for two additional seasons, as there are three books penned by Cixin. The filmmaker duo are dedicated to bringing the complex story to a satisfying end.

While the Star Wars trilogy is already on the cards with different filmmakers, reports suggest that a film dedicated to The Mandalorian and Grogu is also in the works and filming is set to begin later this year. Additionally, Patty Jenkins has confirmed she’ll return to direct Rogue Squadron movie, following the cancellation of her third Wonder Woman movie. Fans can also look forward to The Acolyte series, along with the second season of Andor and Ahsoka, as well as Star Wars Skeleton Crew. Interestingly, filmmakers Taika Waititi, James Mangold and Dave Filoni are also involved in various untitled projects within the Star Wars universe.
