Pakistan: Get the latest updates on terror attacks. A bomb blast in Dera Ismail Khan killed 5, part of an uptick in recent militant activities

As many as five people were killed and 21 injured after a blast near a police patrol in northwest Pakistan, local media reported on Friday.

This explosion in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Dera Ismail Khan is part of a recent surge in terror activities, after Tehreek-e-Taliban-e-Pakistan (TTP) ended its ceasefire deal with the government last November, according to the Dawn newspaper.

Earlier this week, unknown militants attacked a police camp in Dera Ismail Khan, resulting in the death of a policeman. Two soldiers lost their lives in an IED blast in the South Waziristan district on the same day.

In July, 12 soldiers of the Pakistan Army were killed in separate military operations conducted in the Zhob and Sui areas of Balochistan. This marked the highest single-day death toll from terrorist attacks within the military this year.

Earlier, in February 2022, 10 personnel were killed in a ‘fire raid’ in Balochistan’s Kech district, the Pakistani newspaper said. Last month, an Islamanad-based think tank reported a significant increase in militant attacks in August, reaching the highest monthly total in nearly nine years.

A total of 99 attacks were recorded across the country, marking the highest number in a single month since November 2014, according to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS).
