Eid al-Fitr is expected on April 10 or 11 in India, depending on the sighting of the moon. While Muslims in Saudi will be looking for Crescent moon today, those in India and South Asian countries, will gear up to sight it on Tuesday, April 9, 2024.
Eid al-Fitr is an Islamic celebration that commemorates the completion of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting during which Muslims fast from dawn until dusk every day. The Arabic term ‘Eid al-Fitr’ translates to ‘festival of breaking the fast’. Eid al-Fitr is observed on the first day of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Muslim (lunar) calendar. It does not begin until the new moon is visible, therefore Muslims in different parts of the world celebrate the festival at different times. India is expected to celebrate Eid al-Fitr on April 10 or 11 this year.
Eid al-Fitr 2024 Date In India
Every year, Eid al-Fitr falls on a different day depending on when the moon is visible. The date might also change by one or two days depending on a location. Although the exact day will be revealed closer to the celebration, Eid al-Fitr in India is expected to take place on April 10 or 11.
Kerala is the only Indian state whose Eid al-Fitr date is determined based on a sighting of the moon in Saudi Arabia.
Muslims in India, along with those in South Asian countries, will gear up to sight the Crescent moon on Tuesday, April 9, 2024.
EID-UL-FITR 2024 MOON SIGHTING DATE IN SAUDI ARABIA, INDIA
WHAT IS CHAND RAAT?
- Chand Raat, literally meaning “Night of the Moon” in Urdu, is a vibrant celebration observed in South Asian countries like India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
- It falls on the eve of either Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha. Muslims eagerly anticipate spotting the crescent moon (new moon) on Chand Raat, as it signifies the end of Ramadan or Zul-Hijjah, depending on the upcoming Eid.
WHEN IS CHAND RAAT?
Many countries, including those in the Middle East, North America, and the UK, began Ramadan on March 11, 2024. In Saudi Arabia, the Supreme Court has announced that Muslims will sight the crescent moon for the month of Shawwal on the evening of April 8. This sighting determines the end of Ramadan and the start of Eid al-Fitr.
IF THE CRESCENT MOON IS SIGHTED ON APRIL 8, 2024:
- Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 9.
- The night before Eid (Chand Raat) will be on Monday, April 8.
IF THE CRESCENT MOON IS NOT SIGHTED ON APRIL 8:
- Ramadan will be 30 days long.
- Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 10.
- Chand Raat will be on Tuesday, April 9.
- This means Eid al-Fitr could fall on either April 9 or 10, depending on the moon sighting.

Significance of Eid al-Fitr
Eid al-Fitr, which takes place immediately following the completion of Ramadan, is one of the most important holidays in the Islamic calendar. The celebration has deep roots in Islamic customs and dates back to the Prophet Muhammad’s migration from Mecca to Medina in the early days of Islam. The festival’s goal is to foster unity and return to routine life after an extended period of religious devotion and abstinence from food and drink.
How is Eid al-Fitr Celebrated?
On the morning of Eid al-Fitr, Muslims from all over the world gather for communal prayer after showering and changing into new clothes. While Eid al-Fitr traditions differ from nation to nation, they often involve seeing family and friends, exchanging gifts, feasting, and dressing up. Muslims express their appreciation to Allah through these festivities following Ramadan’s introspection and fast.
Apart from social events, Eid al-Fitr is a time when Muslims express their thanks to Allah by giving humanitarian and charitable initiatives. One such is the charity known as Zakat al-Fitr, which is offered throughout Ramadan to the underprivileged and needy. The charity is distributed a few days before Eid al-Fitr, allowing the underprivileged to celebrate the festival in comfort. In addition, Muslims who can do so are obligated to contribute to Zakat al-Fitr.
Do’s and Don’t’s of Eid al-Fitr
Do’s
Participate in the Eid prayer, distribute Zakat al-Fitr, dress appropriately, greet people, spend time with loved ones, perform acts of devotion, and promote happiness.
Don’t’s
Don’t skip the mandatory Eid prayer, don’t wear clothes or engage in any activities that promote arrogance, don’t pronounce the takbeerat in unison, don’t indulge in overabundance and maintain the punctuality achieved throughout Ramadan.
