Another way of celebrating Diwali is to light up Akash deep or a sky lantern. These are lanterns that are generally hung outside homes during the Hindu festival of lights.

According to Hindu traditions, Akash deeps have been a part of Indian culture for a long time. It is considered an important part of the decoration during Diwali. While some people burn it in memory of their ancestors, others burn it to enhance the beauty of their houses. Some people even burn them as a way of expressing devotion to Goddess Lakshmi and God Ganesh, who are considered the gods of wealth and knowledge respectively.

According to famous Hindu astrologer Acharya Pandit Avinash Mishra, the history of akash deep dates back to the period of the Ramayana. He said that it is believed that when King Ram of Ayodhya returned to his city after defeating Ravana, the people of the city lit lamps to welcome him. To celebrate his return after a 14-year exile, the people of Ayodhya made small diyas out of bamboo and lit them. Since then, the tradition has been going on in the city. He also added that, in the modern era, Chinese sky lanterns are now used. People burn the wax, and it flies in the air because of the hot flame.

Pandit Avinash Mishra also revealed the benefits of donating a sky lamp in the month of Kartik. He revealed that burning a sky lantern is considered quite auspicious and also brings happiness, wealth and good fortune in life. People are bestowed with the blessings of their ancestors, gods and goddesses. It is also believed that those who light an Akash deep or a sky lantern on the new moon day of Kartik month are able to attain salvation. It has also been found that people usually start lighting akash deeps or kandlee from their balconies or terraces, from the ekadashi of Ashwin Shukla Paksha to the ekadashi of Kartik Shukla Paksha.
