Following the final whistle, one of Darmstadt’s ultras rushed on to the pitch. The Darmstadt players gathered near the goal post stationed in front of the section of the stands where the ultras had gathered to get behind them.

Darmstadt hosted Augsburg at the Merck-Stadion am Bollenfalltor on Matchday 24 of the Bundesliga 2023-24 on Saturday, March 2. The hosts were handed their 15th league loss of the season in what was a brutal beating by Augsburg. The Fuggerstadter handed a 6-0 shellacking to the bottom-placed Bundesliga minnows, with five of those six goals coming within the first 30 minutes of the first half.

Forward Phillip Tietz broke the deadlock in the second minute, and midfielder Fredrik Jensen doubled the visitors’ lead just minutes later. In-form Bosnian striker Ermedin Demirovic continued his hot streak in front of goal as he scored his 13th and 14th league goals of the season, either side of Ruben Vargas’ fine finish, to put the game well beyond the scope of a comeback.

Augsburg removed their foot off the gas as Darmstadt put in a better defensive showing in the second half. However, Phillip Tietz added to his first half tally with an 84th-minute strike to complete the annihilation.

Following the final whistle, one of Darmstadt’s ultras rushed on to the pitch. The Darmstadt players gathered near the goal post stationed in front of the section of the stands where the ultras had gathered to get behind them.

The Darmstadt ultra didn’t hold back an ounce of the outrage as he lambasted the players for their horrific display, making his emotions known and speaking on behalf of all the Darmstadt fans who want their team to survive the relegation battle. Manager Torsten Lieberknecht was also present alongside the players.

Darmstadt have won just two games all season. Their winless streak stretches back to October 2023, when they registered back-to-back victories in Bundesliga, one of them a 2-1 win over Augsburg in the reverse fixture at WWK Arena.

Die Lilien returned to the top-flight last summer after spending six seasons in the second tier. They returned to the Bundesliga in the 2014-15, 33 years after they had last been a part of the first division. They survived the drop that season, but were relegated in the 2015-16 season. In the past 60 years, apart from the 2014-15 season, they have never managed to avoid relegation after getting promoted.

In their next game, Darmstadt will be facing top-four hopefuls RB Leipzig away from home on Saturday, March 8.
