China accused the United States of using the Philippines as a “pawn” in the South China Sea on March 06. This comes as tensions between the two Asian nations escalate over their territorial dispute in the region. The dispute intensified after Manila summoned a Chinese representative, alleging that China Coast Guard vessels caused two collisions with Philippine boats. Manila said that the China Coast Guard vessels used water cannons against one of the Filipino boats during a resupply mission. Southeast Asian and Australian leaders cautioned against actions that “endanger peace” in the South China Sea.
