Generative AI became popular in 2023 and OpenAI’s ChatGPT was at the forefront of the entire AI revolution. ChatGPT is available across all the platforms and there are various ways to access it on both PCs and smartphones. To make things easier, OpenAI also announced the dedicated ChatGPT app which users can download and use for asking queries as they do on the web.
However, this requires users to manually open the app. It appears that OpenAI is planning to sort that out for users by allowing them to make the ChatGPT app the default assistant on their Android phones.
ChatGPT app could become your default assistant on Android in future
In an APK teardown, Android Authority has found some codes within the latest version of the ChatGPT app that suggest an upcoming ability to be able to set as the default assistant in Android devices.
ChatGPT version 1.2023.352 includes the code “com.openai.voice.assistant.AssistantActivity”. It’s a new addition to the app. However, it is currently disabled by default. But, enabling it manually and launching it shows an overlay on the screen with swirling animation of the voice prompt of the ChatGPT app.
This suggests users will be able to trigger the ChatGPT’s voice chat function from any screen and get things answered.
According to the report, the feature isn’t functional and keeps crashing all the time. So, we think, the feature isn’t fully functional right now or is still under development. We expect OpenAI may make it available in future versions of the ChatGPT app.
Also, the report mentions that evidence of the feature being under development is also there in the codes. The ChatGPT app has added an XML file “assistant_interaction_service” which includes a “voice-integration-service tag defining the sessionService and recognitionService.”
