Navratri is a very important festival in the Hindu faith, celebrated four times a year. The first Navratri of this year, the Chaitra Navratri begins today, April 9. Goddess Shailputri is worshipped on the first day of Navratri. Acharya Pankaj Sawariyan, in a conversation with Local18, mentioned that worshipping Goddess Shailputri brings about various benefits. It is believed that by worshipping her, one can maintain good health, ward off evil, and experience an increase in respect, wealth, glory, and fame. One of the most prominent forms of Goddess Durga, Shailputri was born as the daughter of the king of mountains, the Himalayas. She is depicted as riding a bull with a trident in her right hand and a lotus flower in the left.

The half-moon crest of Goddess Shailputri symbolises the fulfilment of desires. It serves as a beautiful reminder that through devotion, our wishes can indeed be realised. Her depiction riding a bull signifies her deep association with nature and her inherent power. The bull represents strength and stability, and it signifies her connection with the earth. Additionally, the trident that she holds is a potent symbol of strength and protection. It represents her ability to overcome obstacles and protect her devotees from harm.

After performing Ghatasthapana, devotees remember her. Goddess Shailputri is particularly pleased with offerings of white clothes and seasonal flowers, especially red and white ones like Kaner flowers. Belpatra holds special significance in her worship. Additionally, offerings such as incense, lamps, Akshat (rice grains), and fruits can also please the Mother Goddess.

While performing the puja, you can chant this mantra: “Om Devi Shailputri Namah”

To worship Goddess Shailputri, begin by invoking her presence with the chanting of the above mantra. Offer fresh flowers and clothes, and recite her story. Offer foods prepared with ghee and cow’s milk, as well as tuberous fruits, which she particularly enjoys. After this, perform the Aarti ceremony for Maa Shailputri using a lamp and camphor. Upon completing the Aarti, fold your hands and seek forgiveness for any unintentional mistakes, and humbly ask for blessings from the Mother Goddess, expressing your wishes for them to be fulfilled.
