Canadian law enforcement refutes foreign interference links in shooting targeting associate of pro-Khalistan figure, charging two teenagers

Canadian officials have charged two teenagers in connection with a shooting incident targeting the associate of pro-Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was killed in Surrey last June.

India-Canada ties have been strained since Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made statements in the House of Commons on September 18, suggesting potential links between Indian agents and Nijjar’s killing. On February 1, multiple shots were fired at the residence of Simranjeet Singh, who previously participated in organising a protest outside the Indian consulate in Vancouver. Pro-Khalistan groups had accused India of orchestrating the shooting at Simranjeet’s home.

On Tuesday, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) rejected speculation linking the incident to foreign interference and said that investigators have not found any evidence to support such claims. “At the time of this incident, there was speculation circulating that this was connected to foreign interference. Investigators have not established any links to foreign interference in relation to this matter,” the police said in a statement.

The two 16-year-old suspects, whose identities remain undisclosed due to their status as minors, were apprehended by the RCMP on February 12. Charges have been approved against them, including discharging a firearm into a place and possessing a loaded prohibited firearm.

Earlier this month, a pro-Kahlistan outfit had accused India of involvement in a separate shooting incident in Brampton, Greater Toronto Area (GTA), on February 12. The targeted property belonged to Inderjeet Singh Gosal, a key figure in organising the Khalistan Referendum in Surrey.
