As the Lok Sabha polls draw near, the political landscape in Assam is heating up with prophecies and claims from key figures. Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s prominent leader in the Northeast, has asserted that the BJP and its allies will clinch at least 22 of the 25 seats in the region.

Sarma’s prediction is based on the BJP’s impressive performance in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Back then, the BJP and its coalition partners swept the region, securing a total of 18 out of the 25 Lok Sabha constituencies. The saffron party alone won 14 seats, while its allies added four more to the tally, establishing the National Democratic Alliance’s dominance in the Northeast.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Sarma said, “BJP is expected to secure 11 seats in Assam specifically.”

The chief minister stated that the party has conceded three seats, hinting at a strategic shift or potential challenges faced by the BJP in certain constituencies.

Despite this concession, Sarma remains resolute in his belief that the BJP will emerge victorious in the majority of seats across Assam and the Northeast.

Responding to speculation surrounding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Assam, the CM said, “The visit is not directly linked to the impending polls. The Prime Minister frequently visits the Northeast region, for several programmes. Provided the statue of Bir Lachit in Jorhat was ready earlier, he would have come early. You cannot term it a political visit at all. It is the government’s commitment to the development and welfare of the region.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a two-day visit to Assam on Friday to inaugurate, dedicate, and lay foundation stones of several projects worth Rs 18,000 crore on Saturday.

In the thick of the political buzz surrounding the visit, Sarma accused the opposition of orchestrating protests to manipulate media perception. He alleged that these protests were merely a ploy to deceive the media and that the people of Assam could not be misled by such tactics.
