Apple emerged as the winner last year, selling the most smartphones, overtaking Samsung for the first time in the last decade. The iPhone-maker had a big last quarter in India too, recording a shipment of 2.8 million units in Q4 2023, accounting for 7 per cent of market share in the country, according to Canalys’ quarterly report.
In Q4, more than half of Apple’s smartphone shipments in India were of iPhone 15 series.The series includes two models – iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. Then there’s the Pro series, with iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
iPhone 15 all the way
The iPhone 15 series saw a notable success in India, as Apple promoted the latest models during the festive sales that take place across both online and offline channels throughout the country. As India’s large population celebrates Diwali in the last quarter of the year, discounts and offers are offered to attract customers.
“With the celebration of Diwali in November 2023, Apple got the opportunity to push the latest iPhone 15 series during the festive sales, contributing more than 50% to its shipments in Q4,” said Sanyam Chaurasia, Senior Analyst at Canalys. “Additionally, discounts on the previous-generation iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 models during online sales resulted in Apple’s record shipments, allowing it to capture 7% market share in India.”
Apple launched the iPhone 15 series in September, and it went on sale in India in the same month. The iPhone 15 brought a some noticeable changes over to its previous generations. The models marked the shift to USB-C, then the two iPhones also got the much-due Dynamic Island of Pro models, and an upgraded 48MP camera.
Although Apple has overtaken Samsung in the global market, Samsung still holds the position of market leader in India, where a total of 148.9 million smartphones were shipped in 2023, according to Canalys.
