After over a week of suspense, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday named former Union Minister Vishnu Deo Sai as its pick for the post of Chhattisgarh Chief Minister. After the announcement, CM-designate Sai met Chhattisgarh Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan in Raipur and staked the claim to form the government in the state.
With this announcement, the people of Kunkuri, the constituency from where Sai was elected as a legislator, recalled Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s ‘big’ promise.
During campaigning for the Chhattisgarh Assembly election last month, Shah, while addressing a rally in the Kunkuri urged voters to elect Sai (59), promising to make the latter a “big man” (bada Aadmi) if the party comes back to power in the state.

Sai won the seat by defeating sitting Congress MLA UD Minj by a margin of 25,541 votes. Kunkuri constituency falls in the state’s Surguja division where the BJP won all 14 segments.
Sai is considered a prominent tribal leader in Chhattisgarh, who emerged from the grassroots and reached the ranks of Union Minister before becoming the Chief Minister.
