The first end came to a thrilling finish as both Varma and Deotale were in fine form, scoring perfect 10s, keeping the scores level at 30-30.

The second end also went down to the wire with both archers not missing the mark, and the scores 50-50. But, with the final arrow of the end, Varma finally slipped up and gave Deotale a slender one-point lead of 59-60.

The third end only spelt more trouble for Varma, who was seemingly taken aback from the pressure and slipped up with a score of 8 on one arrow. But, Deotale remained stoic as ever and kept his perfect streak going to take the lead over Varma with a score of 87-90.

Deotale finally showed signs of bein human when he finally slipped up on one shot, scoring a 9 and ending his perfect streak in the fourth end. Varma, on the other hand, with all the pressure on him, rallied back with a perfect 30, to keep the scores 117-119, still leaning towards Deotale.

It was not over yet, as in the fifth end, Varma’s resilience helped him keep his calm as he put up yet another perfect 30, to end with 147 points.

Deotale, who held onto a 2-point lead, slipped up in the first arrow of the end, cutting the deficit down to one point. And with his last arrow to go, and a perfect 10 needed to win, Ojas Deotale stared right down the sights and hit a bulls-eye to bring himself the Gold.

The nail-biter of a final provides India with yet another Gold-Silver finish in the Asian Games this year, and takes India’s total tally of medals up to 99.
