A 17-year-old girl, who was preparing for NEET, died by suicide in Rajasthan’s Kota taking the total number of such cases to 25 this year. This is the highest recorded suicide rate reported in the coaching hub over the past eight years. Last year, as many as 15 students had died by suicide.

The deceased, identified as Priyam Singh, was a resident of Mau in Uttar Pradesh. She had shifted to Kota around one-and-a-half years back to prepare for the medical entrance exam. The student had been living alone on rent at an apartment on Dakania Road.

The Vigyan Nagar police station in-charge Kaushalya said that Priyam had gone to the coaching centre on Monday morning. At around 3 pm, while returning to her apartment from the coaching, she stopped at a point and started vomiting. After seeing her condition worsening, some students informed the coaching staff who admitted her to a private hospital in Talwandi where she died during treatment at around 6.45 pm.

According to the police, she had consumed poison while returning from the coaching centre. The police have informed Priyam’s family members. Her room will be searched after her parents’ arrival.

This comes after coaching institutes in Kota announced they will be postponing all exams for two months. Besides, the Kota hostel management had earlier ordered all hostels and paying guests facilities to install spring-loaded fans and “anti-suicide nets” in the students’ rooms to make them “suicide-proof.”

A few days earlier, a 16-year-old student from Ranchi, Jharkhand who was also preparing for NEET at a coaching centre in Rajasthan’s Kota died by suicide. While last month, two NEET aspirants died by suicide on the same day. 17-year-old Avishkar Shambaji Kasle died by jumping from the 6th floor of the coaching centre’s building in Jawahar Nagar, while 18-year-old Adarsh Raj hung himself in his rented home.
