Amul is maintaining the prices of ice creams and beverages for now, it anticipates that increased prices of chocolates will not negatively impact its market.

There’s a chance Amul chocolates will cost more soon. This is because the price of cocoa beans, a key ingredient in chocolate, has significantly increased. Reportedly, the price per kilogram of cocoa beans in India has jumped from around Rs 150-250 to Rs 800.

According to a report by Times of India, this rise in cocoa prices is being felt around the world, and chocolate manufacturers are looking at raising prices or reducing the size of chocolate products.

The report highlighted that among several firms across industries, not just chocolate makers but dairy firms including Amul, ice cream maker Baskin Robbins and snacking brand Kellanoca, are feeling the pinch of higher Cocoa prices.

Amul, which is owned by the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), is considering a price hike of 10-20% for their chocolates, the report added.

Although Amul is maintaining the prices of its ice creams and beverages for now, it anticipates that the increased prices of chocolates will not negatively impact its market share.

The US ice cream brand Baskin Robbins is also intending to maintain its prices, while Havmor aims to keep its current pricing level stable as well.

Cocoa Beans

Cocoa beans are the heart of chocolate! They are roasted to unlock their flavor, then ground into a thick paste called chocolate liquor. This liquor contains both cocoa butter and cocoa solids. For cocoa powder, the butter is pressed out and the solids are dried and pulverized. To make chocolate bars, sugar and some of the cocoa butter are added back to the liquor, along with other ingredients like vanilla, and the mixture is refined to create the decadent chocolate we love.
