OpenAI last week announced that its ChatGPT Store – a dedicated space where users can find custom GPTs created by builders for specific needs – is now live. It seems that love in the 21st century has gone digital, and Cupid’s arrow now comes with a processing chip. What next? A virtual heartbreak? Maybe soon enough as this GPT store now has AI girlfriends.
While it may fascinate some, others might feel creepy but OpenAI must not be ‘happy’ as their technology has been used to make these AI girlfriends and, that too, by flouting the platform’s rules.
According to a report by Quartz, OpenAI’s GPT Store is now flooded with AI girlfriend bots. A quick search for the term “girlfriend” on the new GPT store returns results with “girlfriend” AI chatbots, including “Korean Girlfriend,” “Virtual Sweetheart,” “Your girlfriend Scarlett,” “Your AI girlfriend, Tsu”.
The report said that if a user moves ahead to have a chat with one such bot, the “Virtual Sweetheart” will receive prompts like “What does your dream girl look like?” and “Share with me your darkest secret”.
GPT Store rules
However, the chatbots that have been created flout a rule of using GPT Store. The company has banned GPTs “dedicated to fostering romantic companionship or performing regulated activities.”
The company also noted that “these policies may be enforced automatically at submission time or applied retroactively upon further review”.
New technology, same people
This is not the first time that a conversational chatbot has been used for such a purpose. If you are old enough, you may remember the early days of Siri and Google Assistant. People used to throw random questions, including romantic and sex-related ones without knowing that the data is being used to train models.
Back in 2018, Rishi Chandra, who was VP of product management and general manager of Home Products, said at a launch event of voice activated speakers Google Assistant has received 4.5 lakh marriage proposals from India.
Citing data from statistics from mobile app analytics company data.ai, the report said that seven of the 30 AI chatbot apps that users in the US downloaded in 2023 from app stores were related to AI friends, girlfriends, or companions.
