The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) declared its results for the Civil Services Examinations (CSE) recently. There have been many who secured excellent ranks after hard work and dedication. Among them is ace shuttler Kuhoo Garg, who is already a known name in the sports world, especially the badminton arena. Kuhoo Garg has earned fame for herself with many national matches and represented the country in several international matches as well. But, one knee injury was all it took, to steer her life in a different direction. In an interview with News18, Kuhoo Garg revealed that it was this knee injury which led her to spend more than a year preparing for UPSC exams.

Kuhoo Garg clinched 178th rank in the UPSC examination to become an Indian Police Service (IPS) Officer without any coaching. Interestingly, her father is a retired IPS Officer, Director General of Police (DGP) Uttarakhand, Ashok Kumar.

Kuhoo Garg started to play badminton at the age of 9. She won 56 national/all-India rankings and 19 international medals. She has played women’s doubles and mixed doubles, where her world rank is 34. She also played in the quarter-finals of the World Championship in 2018. She suffered a knee injury and an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tear in the trials of Uber Cup, for which she underwent surgery. She could not play any matches for a year, so she decided to prepare for civil services. Kuhoo Garg accomplished this feat with her dedication and hard work.

Kuhoo Garg said that she did not go to any coaching classes for UPSC preparation. She studied on her own, referring to the internet for the sources. Kuhoo shared that all the necessary materials for the UPSC exam are available online, which she used for preparations. She further urged UPSC aspirants to prepare for the exams through online study material.

Kuhoo Garg also opened up about the pain of leaving the playground due to the injury. She was preparing for the Common Wealth Games and Olympics but the ACL tear and knee injury meant she had to rest. Instead of sulking, she decided to put her restlessness to use by focusing her attention on studying and preparing for UPSC exams.
